Buying Electronic Books

If you are new to the electronic book market, and you are interested in buying an electronic book, otherwise known as an eBook, you should do your homework.  There are many options today and you can often find numerous eBooks on the same topic. Most reputable electronic book merchants will give you a summary of the ebook, if not a full table of contents.

Keep in mind that electronic books are usually written by freelance or contracted authors. The value of the information contained in the ebook is not necessarily ensured by the length. A 200 page electronic book will cost you more but it may not have as much good content as an 80 page electronic book on another site. Whatever the topic or interest, you should do your research before you buy the ebook or you may be disappointed.

You should also look at the format in which the electronic book is published and be sure you will be able to pen and read the ebook after your download. In most cases, your internet connection speed should not be an issue. Even the longest electronic book should download relatively quickly unless it is published in an unusual format.

If the ebook contains a lot of graphics, it may take you a long time to open and scroll through the book. Be sure your computer speed, cache memory and graphics capability is suitable before you download instructional books, business ebooks or other electronic books that may contain a lot of drawings, photos or charts.

You should also know that you can find a lot of free books online. Before you pay for the reference material in an electronic book, look for free electronic books on the same topic. Some sites even allow you to subscribe to get free eBooks for the promise of paying for other books during the term of your subscription.

Even famous authors are publishing eBooks these days. Several years ago one very prolific, very famous author took a chance and published a new book, chapter by chapter, as a free ebook. The experiment was somewhat successful and perhaps ahead of its time but it did engender a lot of interest in the rest of the book. The author did not publish all chapters in the online book. He only published the first few chapters. Readers who wanted to know the end of the story had to buy the book in a bookstore when it was finally published. That experiment, combined with the increase in good, inexpensive eBook reading tools and the increase in the popularity of electronic book publication by well known publishing houses has caused the electronic book market to explode. It is not unusual to find someone sitting next to you on a commuter train reading an ebook on their handheld device or browser-capable cell phone. So, don’t be shy! Join the throngs of eBook readers today and enjoy the wealth of online book publications.
